The fist thing I learned – 90 days is a VERY, VERY VERY LOOOOOOOOONG TIME!
It’s true what they say “A 90-day challenge instills a sense of habit through genuine intent and effort. “
It all started with the loss of this dear friend’s father who’s standing by my side. When COVID took that life, that was when I got the wake-up call to move who I could to action. MOVE(exercise) to Overcome obesity and to overcome the adversity and everything that came with it- anxiety, depression, health issues.
What is funny is that by the time the movement was 30 days in, I was already tired, and I couldn’t imagine how much more everyone else who had been supporting and joining the movement must have felt. But through pushing and really holding the fort and discipline through even the days and weeks where there was nothing left in me, I learned to dig deeper inside when it seems nothing is left.
In the 90 days I also learned a new word and had a life lesson reiterated for me.
New WORD: VICISSITUDES. Big-ups to you if you know the meaning already!
The re-iterated lesson: And here I’d like to paraphrase the original author. The vicissitudes of life NEED YOU, in fact, DEMAND you be rooted. Rooted in something. For me, it’s being rooted in Christ- in Faith. Whatever it is, there has to be something you are rooted in. In other words, you need a WHY to OVERCOME.
90 days taught me to commit, to endure, to learn discipline, and also to keep going even when no one else is watching- because when you do get to the finish line, then you realize, people were watching. The universe is actually watching. But most importantly- you FINISHED what you started. And it all began with a WHY.
Ok so here’s the real list of the things I took away.
LESSONS AND REFLECTIONS
HEALING IS NOT A ONE MAN TASK
“I need to heal.” I think that was one of the statements I made to my best friend as God revealed to me during this very movement that there were some things I had gone through the previous year that I needed to heal from. And personally, I think that’s what we often think- that healing is something we need to DO, on our OWN. But really, it’s something we need to GO THROUGH, and often with others.
I could not have done that without people picking up that I was not ok, without someone to listen to me, without someone to journey me through what I needed to heal from and someone guiding me even on the HOW, and someone checking in all the time.
And I think that’s what we had realised before starting the movement as one of the aims of movement overcome was to raise funds to help sponsor someone who might be going through depression or anxiety due to losing someone from COVID, or even losing a job to go and see a professional therapist. This was with the understanding and realisation that healing often needs loads of support. Just seeing the few stories that people shared during the movement, on live chats, really brought to life how other people are such an important part of one’s healing process.
And so through all the healing; physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing that we need to do this year, may you not take for granted the power in calling out for a helping hand and a listening ear.
WEIGHT, OBESITY AND MENTAL HEALTH-RELATED ISSUES ARE A SENSITIVE AND COMPLEX TOPIC. BUT REMAIN A PANDEMIC THAT WE NEED TO FIGHT, DAILY.
The hardest thing I had to do was talk about one of the most sensitive topics I know-weight. Putting information out there that was necessary but that I knew a lot of people would hate me for. You will know this by the number of tweets that come up on how one should “never comment on someone’s weight.”
More than that, health behavior itself is honestly speaking COSTLY. I cannot explain how many children in the rural areas I came across that could not participate in jogging, the workout sessions,
Nonetheless, I hope that somehow, more and more we can move more people to even just the CONTEMPLATION stage of behavior change when it comes to pursuing health and weight loss where necessary. From what I observe, this needs to start by us starting to instill good health behaviors in our children, because they are the next generation. It will never stop being a sensitive issue, but it will also never stop being a health problem, and finding the fine line to address both including social issues, is still going to be a long journey.
MOVEMENT IS DEFINITELY A SURE WAY TO KILL MANY BIRDS WITH ONE STONE
Listen, this one I’ve said many times before. From great mental health, reduction of stress, curbing cravings, keeping in shape, and much more….keep it moving and you will surely kill the number of years you look to a smaller number than your waist size! Exercise will forever prove to be a medicine of its own kind.
CONVERSATIONS ARE ENRICHING.
There is so much to learn from others. From partners who did the movement with me, to the professionals I had approached to do the chats with. There is also something special and very different about hearing or learning something from a person rather than a source of information on the internet. It becomes relatable, personal, memorable. I really pray for more opportunities to have health-related, spirituality-related, and even wellness-related conversations. Conversations are enriching and enlightening.
YOU DO NOT CARRY THE BLESSING TO EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE, YOURSELF.
And nor can you do anything that requires
Even though it was such a small scale movement, I saw how allowing God to use those people around you that he has blessed you with, to play a part in your life and ASKING for help will open doors you could never have imagined!
YOUR WELLNESS IS A DAILY , CONSCIOUS DECISION.
I was never going to end without mentioning this one. I love it because, during the 90 days, I had to learn to lead a balanced life. I had to make sure not to ignore any of the other elements of myself or my life as much as movement overcome was consuming so much of my time!
And I believe that’s what life is about. In different seasons there will be a time to focus on something different, but I believe wellness and fulfillment come when we’re able to attend to all aspects of our wellness in a balanced way, 365 days a year, in a daily, intentional manner.
WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR – THE OUTCOME AND RESULTS!
Well, I did promise to be the pawn of the of the movement. Here goes.
When we started the movement, I was a good 61kg, I was tired half the time but was excited to start a new challenge and looked something like this. I actually didn’t really want to lose weight as such but wanted my control over my body and fitness back.
And well, take into account that this is AFTER Christmas and some holiday bingeing, (yes I had cheat days-balance!) the outcome 90 days later is that I’m stronger mentally, I’ve learned endurance through fatigue, exercising
